Melanotan 1 (Afamelanotide)

Melanotan 1 — often referred to as “the tanning peptide” — is a synthetic analog of the natural hormone alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally developed for photoprotection and pigmentation disorders, not just cosmetic tanning.

Chemical Nature:
A synthetic linear peptide analog of α-MSH.

How It Works:
Stimulates the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) on melanocytes, increasing melanin production (skin pigment).

 
Commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder for research.
Clinically used as Afamelanotide implants (Scenesse®) for approved medical indications such as erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP).
